Blog 4. Free themed topic: Islands
Hello everyone!
Today I will talk about
the islands in the Biobío region of Chile. Fortunately, I have had the
opportunity to meet them on different occasions in my life. This region has
three islands, from north to south, called Quiriquina, Santa Maria and Mocha.
Quiriquina is a small
island located in Concepción Bay, currently administered by the Chilean Navy.
Santa Maria island belongs
to the Coronel Commune and has approximately 2200 inhabitants.
Mocha is located approx. 40
km off the coast of the province of Arauco and has 800 inhabitants. In the
center of the island there is a small mountain. It is very beautiful because it
is covered with native forest and is part of the Isla Mocha National Reserve.
The three islands can be
reached by boat, but since Mocha is further away and the sea in that area has
plenty of waves, aircraft are often used.
In the Santa Maria and
Mocha islands, the inhabitants’ principal activities are fishing and herding.
In addition, numerous archaeological sites, both domestic and funerary, have
been recorded on these islands. Various artifacts have been found in these
sites that are associated with their life forms, which are currently protected
in the Natural History Museum of Concepción.
